This project is part one of striving to design a monolithic living roof structure. It is the research and motivation that lead to the Generative Habitat project, and represents the progression from an entirely designer created solution to a designer and digital computation solution.

Prototype 1.0 ; what you see here is not a model, it is a working prototype to test whether a structural sponge with controlled variations of openings could be enough to sustain plant matter and filter water.

The jump to Generative Design: Prototype 2.0 ; generating in the same way prototype 1.0 had been created, using a field of spheres as a negative.
Prototype 2.0 ; generated with appropriate load capacity and around a field of spheres, however not solid enough for plant growth or water retention or filtration.

Prototype 2.1 ; generated though suspended plates with controlled openings.
Prototype 2.1 ; generated though suspended plates with controlled openings proved more solid and successful, but not homogeneous.
Prototype 2.2 ; generated though controlled "plan / elevation" geometries and loaded appropriately.
Prototype 2.2 ; unsuccessful results, although an interesting experiment.
Prototypes 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 all printed as 1.5" x 1.5" cubes.
Upon investigation in 3 differing modes of generating, prototype 2.1 proved to have the most promise.
